Eating Well For Your Baby

You are pregnant – Congratulations!  The next nine months are going to be an exciting time, not just for you but for your growing baby! Eating well for your baby is going to be very important if you think of all the things your new little one wil be accomplishing over the next few months. Babies start as just one single cell, and then divide at an rapid rate. Their organs develop, their heart forms and begins to beat with it’s own life,  and all of their five senses form.

Basically, your baby goes from a little speck that cannot be seen with the human eye into a seven, eight, nine or even ten pound adorable newborn. In order for your baby to develop as healthy as possible, your diet will be playing a large role. This is because your diet is how your baby is going to receive all the vitamins, minerals, protein and fluids that he or she needs to grow and develop. The best thing you and any other pregnant mother can do for your growing baby is to eat as healthy as you possibly can. Let us look at all the benefits of eating well for your baby.

First, eating right is going to help your baby’s organ development. Your baby only has a relatively short period of time to develop vital organs such as heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. Eating a diet that lacks vitamin D or calcium can interfere with your baby’s bone and tooth growth.

Eating too little when you are pregnant may hamper your baby’s growth. Keep an eye on your weight to make sure you are gaining within the recommended range. Small babies are at a greater risk for healthy problems once they are born.

However, on the other hand, over eating may cause your baby to grow too big, too fast. Babies who are very large are at a greater risk for delivery complications. Sometimes babies that are very large can require assistance and sometime cannot be delivered vaginally without the assistance of instruments such as forceps or a vacuum. Some women are even forced to have a cesarean section because they can not deliver their baby vaginally.

Some research has been done that shows what you eat during pregnancy can affect your baby’s eating habits later on. Babies can actually taste, and they can get use to the flavors from food that makes its way into their amniotic fluid. Therefore, it is quiet possible that your baby may have preferences for certain types of foods before they even take their first spoonful of solids. By making sure your pregnancy diet contains a lot of vegetables and fruit, you can help to ensure that your baby will enjoy eating good healthy food when he or she is ready for solids.

And also, as difficult as it is to believe, some studies have shown that what you are eating can contribute to the personality of your developing baby. Research has shown that babies born to mothers who were under-nourished often tend to smile less often and are a lot sleepier when compared to those whose mothers ate very. And further to that, studies have also shown that pregnant mothers who consumed enough omega-3 acids during their final trimester have babies who showed healthier sleep patterns than other babies. Now that is something that all new mothers should be aiming to achieve!

Lastly, your baby’s brain requires you to eat good, healthy foods, especially during your last trimester. Unlike the rest of your baby’s organs, the brain has its greatest growth spurt covering the third trimester. This is the best time to eat protein, calories and Omega-3 fatty acids. A diet rich in these elements will ensure the optimum brain development.

There has never been a more important time to eat healthy, so when you are pregnant, the best gift you can give is to make sure you are eating well for your baby.
